Her debut novel The Devouring of Bernadette Quan (Park Row Books/HarperCollins, 2027) is inspired by her ancestors’ multigenerational fight against colonization in Vietnam. When she’s not brainstorming new ways to haunt a house, she can be found singing opera, knitting sweaters, or trying to teach her dogs to talk.

As the child of Vietnamese refugee parents, Ruth Nguyen found her place to belong in fictional worlds. She comes from a long line of survivors, fierce women, and ghost storytellers, which she channels into dark, brooding novels she hopes would make them proud. Her debut novel The Devouring of Bernadette Quan (Park Row Books/HarperCollins, 2027) is inspired by her ancestors’ multigenerational fight against colonization in Vietnam. She’s also the author of numerous short stories, and a public speaker and teacher. When she’s not brainstorming new ways to haunt a house, she can be found roaming the woods of South Carolina, singing opera, knitting her umpteenth sweater, or trying to teach her dogs to talk.

The Devouring of Bernadette Quan (Park Row Books, 2027) is a modern gothic thriller about a Vietnamese-American chef with the supernatural ability to steal a dark secret from anyone who eats her food, who is forced to confront her family’s own messy past at her new employer’s eerie colonial villa in the Vietnamese highlands. Exploring themes of familial healing, ancestral rage, anticolonial resistance, and food as a vehicle for all three, it will appeal to readers who loved Alix E. Harrow’s Starling House or the culinary horror film The Menu.
